Computing

This lab investigation is to familiarize students with some college computing capabilities and procedures. Students are expected to take any notes they need for future reference. Students are strongly encouraged to begin each major section by writing down the section header and then recording notes underneath.

Overview of Capilano computers

Computers throughout Capilano university, whether in a locked classroom or an open area such as the library, are available for drop-in use by students of this course limited only by availability (greatest availability during off-hours such as evenings and weekends). Close to the Physics lab is the Biology Resource Room as well as the Writing Center. Information on Cap computers is on the IT web site. Information about wireless access is also on IT web site.

The Physics lab computers work as the rest of Cap with logon through your student network ID. In the Physics lab, Microsoft Internet Explorer favourites are replaced with lab specific links

Internet: the web

The major activity on the internet is using a web browser to view information and using embedded hyperlinks to select web information. The university has several web browsers available. The Physics lab web pages were built for Explorer but should work with other web browsers as well.

• Bring up Microsoft Internet Explorer web browser and record its complete version number (found under About Internet Explorer)
• Find the Physics Course Support web site and navigate to the 104 labs web site. Take note of its web address.
• Navigate to next week's 104 lab period and, in your notebook, write a title to each of the prelab questions. A title is very short, a few words, relating to what the prelab question is about.
• Navigate to a Physics lab instructor's home page (take note of its web address). Take a look at a few pages from your lab instructor's web.

• Capilano academics have a number of additional computing resources for students. On the sciences lab floor, along the Biology side is a Biology resource room with a number of computers (open for use by any science student). The Writing center on FIR 3rd floor also has a number of computers.
• For storage and transfer of files, we suggest using a USB memory key.
• Before next lab class, familiarize yourself with Cap computers and drop-in access.
